The process

Where most cabinet jobs go wrong

Kitchen cabinets are the hardest painted surface in the house: they get touched, cleaned, steamed and greased every single day. Skipping one step shows up within a year.

01

Degrease the surfaces

Kitchen cabinets carry cooking oils whether you can see them or not. Every surface is cleaned to strip contaminants — nothing bonds to grease.

02

Hardware off, or taped off

Handles come off where the project calls for it, and door hardware is carefully removed or masked so you do not end up with painted hinges.

03 · the one people skip

Bonding clear primer

A bonding clear primer goes on before any color. This is the number one missed preparation step in cabinet painting, and it is the reason finishes peel off door edges a year later.

04

Stain-glaze, then varnish

Two coats of a customized stain-glaze mixed for your kitchen, then one or two varnish coats — the layer that actually takes the daily abuse.

Refinish or replace

Cabinets are the cheapest big change in a kitchen

New cabinets mean demolition, countertops coming off, a lead time, and a kitchen you cannot use. Refinishing keeps the boxes and the layout you already have.

  • Keep solid boxes. If the frames and doors are sound, paint is the honest recommendation.
  • Days, not weeks. Most kitchens fall inside the one-to-three-day range of a normal project.
  • Any color. Sherwin-Williams, matched to your counters and floor at the color consultation.
  • Same three-year warranty on workmanship as the rest of our painting.

Honest advice

When we will tell you not to paint them

If the boxes are delaminating, the doors are sagging off their frames, or water has swollen the particle board under the sink, paint is money spent on something that is already failing. We will say so at the estimate and give you the option of doing just the sound runs, or waiting.

Straight answers

Cabinet painting questions

How much does it cost to paint a house in Austin?

Price comes down to square footage, the condition of the surfaces, what they are made of (siding, stucco, brick, Hardie), and how many colors you want. That is why the estimate happens at your house instead of over the phone: an owner walks every surface, writes down the exact products and materials, and gives you a fixed price. Whatever the contract says is what you pay at the end — Tex Painting does not re-price a job on completion.

Do you paint kitchen cabinets, or only walls?

Both. Cabinets get degreased first, hardware removed or taped off, then a bonding clear primer — the step most painters skip — followed by two coats of a customized stain-glaze and one or two varnish coats.

What does the warranty cover?

A Limited Three Year Warranty of Quality: for 36 months after completion, Tex Painting repairs peeling, blistering or chipping paint that resulted from defective workmanship. It does not cover ordinary wear and tear, damage from moisture or structural movement, or horizontal surfaces such as decks and railings.

What paint do you use?

Sherwin-Williams. The specific line and sheen are written into your contract before work starts, so you know exactly what is going on your walls rather than finding out afterward.

Ready for a real number on your project?

An owner walks your home, writes down the exact products going on it, and gives you a price that does not move. About 45 minutes, no obligation.
